The Catholic Education Office (CEO) of Hong Kong Diocese invited the Supervisors and principals of all Catholic schools to come on 2nd June for a day-long seminar in the Parish Hall at St. Margaret¡¦s Parish Centre. The aim of the event was to learn from the successful experience of Sydney CEO in strategic planning and external school review and most important of all, in strengthening the Catholic identity to make our schools better.
Brother Kelvin Canavan, Executive Director of Schools in Sydney, and Mr. Merv McCormack, principal of Casimir College in Sydney were invited as guest speakers to conduct the seminar and workshop. Brother Kelvin compared the education system of England, Scotland and Australia and pointed out the importance of developing a systemic plan with clearly articulated initiatives and goals that could be assessed by a well managed internal process carried out in individual schools by all stakeholders. The end product of the whole mechanism was to bring about effective teaching and learning. Another very important message Brother Kelvin would like to convey was to strengthen the Catholic identity of Catholic schools. Principals of Catholic schools were not only leaders for learning, but also religious leaders with a Catholic mission.
In the afternoon session, some Hong Kong principals who had visited Sydney in March gave a sharing session on the good practices they had observed in Sydney Catholic schools. Then the principal of Casimir College, Mr. Merv McComack, explained the dual role of a Catholic school principal, stressing that a religious leader should look after the spiritual development of students. With the help of the facilitators, participants worked in groups to prepare an annual strategic plan focusing on how to strengthen Catholic identity in schools.
The event ended at around 4:00 pm. with participants having a better insight into strategic leadership and management, external school review as well as the role of a religious leader.
