The annual retreat of Diocesan School Principals was held on 27th April 2006 at Aberdeen St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School with a total attendance of over one hundred principals. The Catholic Education Office had invited the Vice-Rector of Holy Spirit Seminary, Fr. Benedict Lam as the Retreat Master.
Fr. Lam started his sharing with an anecdote. He made good use of scripture readings, slides and films to explain the difference between a “job”, a “mission” and a “vocation”. A person’s attitude would affect the end result of every task. Whether it was a satisfying deed or a torture, whether the participant was a pro-active worker or just a passive executor depended mainly on his attitude. If principals regarded their work merely as a bread-winning job, they might be easily frustrated when faced with challenges and difficulties. They might be discouraged and disillusioned and eventually, found the job meaningless. On the other hand, if they regarded it as a vocation, a call from God, they would not be intimidated by brambles and obstacles on their way but would accept these as part of their “Cross”. Principals should understand that God had never promised a thorn-free path for those who followed Him. However, with confidence and trust in Him, they would have the ability and wisdom to overcome hurdles they encountered.
Principals were also reminded that they should allow themselves time for reflection and to listen to God’s voice.
In his homily, Fr. Lam again encouraged participants that if they supported each other and worked with greater unity, there would always be light at the end of the tunnel. Only with this belief in mind, with hope and confidence in God, would principals be able to carry on their work with undaunted strength and enthusiasm.
