In alignment with the policy of the Catholic Diocese to prepare competent leaders for Catholic Schools to meet the needs of the changing society and education sector, The Central Management Committee for Diocesan Schools continues to organize the second phase of the "Catholic School Leadership Development Programme" for middle management. There are altogether 63 participants from secondary and primary schools. The entire programme, which would last for one year, includes talks, live-in training camp and school attachment.
The Kick-off Ceremony was held on 6th November 2004 at the Hall of St. Margaret's Parish Centre, Happy Valley. Miss Alice Woo, Episcopal Delegate for Education, addressed the audience and quoted St. Paul as an example to encourage participants to strengthen their own belief in upholding Catholic identity in schools. It was important that they worked with concerted effort for the well-being of Catholic education in Hong Kong.
The guest speaker, Dr. Francis W. M. Cheung, Deputy Secretary General of Hong Kong Examinations & Assessment Authority pointed out the importance of professional leadership in schools. He emphasized that all successful schools had professional leaders who were able to build a clear vision for all to follow. At the same time, leaders should have a strong sense of commitment as well as self-awareness to accommodate changes and to keep pace with the rapidly changing society.
The second speaker, Fr. Marciano Baptista SJ, explained explicitly the essence and spirit of Catholic Education. He emphasized that Catholic education aimed at nurturing students to love and to serve. To achieve this, school leaders should have a strong sense of self-awareness and the ability to reflect continuously. It was only through continual improvement and development that leaders could exemplify the true Gospel spirit in their everyday life.
The Central Management Committee for Diocesan Schools hoped that through the different areas of learning in this programme, participants could understand the true meaning of Catholic education and put it into real practice in schools.
