IT Experience Sharing Seminar:
The Use of Information Technology in Remote Visual Teaching and Learning
Striving to enhance teachers’ effectiveness in using Information Technology in teaching, the Central Management Committee for Diocesan Schools held an experience-sharing seminar at St. Francis of Assisi’s English Primary School on 13th May 2006. More than 150 secondary and primary school teachers participated in the event.
The seminar commenced with an opening prayer led by Rev. Stephen Tam, Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi Church. He reminded teachers to alert their students to the ethical issues while incorporating IT into their daily teaching. Ms. Margaret Lam, Convenor of the IT Development Committee, extended her welcome address and introduced the committee members, the future development and the goal of the committee’s service. She quoted the message of Pope John Paul II on the 36th World Communications Day, “The Internet offers extensive knowledge, but it does not teach values; and when values are disregarded, humanity is demeaned and man easily loses sight of his transcendent dignity.” Ms. Lam expressed concern about the necessity of ethical norms for students to acquire knowledge through information technology.
The seminar was divided into two sessions, namely “Topic Sharing” and “Group Sharing”. Mr. Lai and Mr. Li of St. Francis of Assisi’s English Primary School started the first session by introducing their school’s project: “Remote Visual Education Trial Plan”. They demonstrated how to utilize remote visual technology as a tool for project and distance learning. The session then continued with the presentation of Mr. Lau of Lai King Catholic Secondary School on “Utilizing 3D Virtual Backgrounds for Life-wide Learning”. Showing the episodes produced by his school’s Campus TV team, he pointed out how the activity had allowed students to develop their creativity, critical thinking and communication skills. Lastly, the staff of ICT Technologies & Services Limited demonstrated how the system of “Remote Classroom Distant Learning” enabled cross-border exchanges, allowing both local teachers and students to broaden their perspectives in creative cross-nation exchanges.
After the “Topic Sharing” session, Mr. Yuk, Principal of Leung Shek Chee College and coordinator of the seminar, delivered a vote of thanks and a concluding speech. He expressed his gratitude towards the guest speakers for their lively demonstrations. He also highlighted “Remote Visual Teaching” as a breakthrough in traditional teaching methodology. Since teachers and students would no longer be restricted by time and location, both teaching and learning would be more effective.
The second session was “Group Sharing”. Participants were divided into seven groups, with guest speakers sharing how they implemented IT teaching in the curriculum. The seminar came to an end after enthusiastic exchanges of experience.
