The
Centre for Catholic Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the
Religious and Moral Education Curriculum Development Centre jointly organized a
Conference on ¡§Religious Education in Hong Kong Schools: Theory and
Experience¡¨ on 8th June 2007. Sister
Leonie Crotty, the Director of Religious Education of the Sydney Catholic
Education Office was specially invited to deliver a key-note speech.
Around 200 supervisors, principals and teachers attended the Conference.
Sister
Leonie said that the advent of the laity in catholic schools was an example of
God¡¦s action and spirit in the Church. Through
their word and witness, the laity could evangelize in their schools.
She further explained that Catholic schools should be clear and
unambiguous about their vision and mission.
They should introduce students to a rich and vibrant catholic culture,
educating the students with a commitment to the Gospel values so that on leaving
school, their presence in government, business, medicine, social work and in
reality every facet of life would make a difference in our world.
It was also the responsibility of all teachers to integrate Catholic
values in all school activities and relationships. In
providing quality teaching and learning, all Catholic schools should be schools
that parents would readily choose for their children.
The
participants were then divided into groups for sharing on specific topics.
Rev. Simon Lam SDB gave the concluding talk on ¡§The key to the success
of Religious Education.¡¨
