Around 12,000 teachers, principals and supervisors from Hong Kong’s 300 Catholic schools filled the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom on 27 April 2005 for a spectacular afternoon of reflection and learning played out under colourful lighting in drama, dance and song.

The Official Party performing the Opening Ceremony included Bishop Joseph Zen, the Bishop of Hong Kong, Mrs. Fanny Law, Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower, Bishop John Tong, Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong, Ms. Alice Woo, Episcopal Delegate for Education, Fr. Yip Hing Wah, Guest Speaker, Mr. Michael Hong, Chairperson, Sr. Lucy Chung and Ms. Mary Chan, the two Vice Chairpersons.

The afternoon drama depicted the plight of teachers whose idealism is eroded by pressure, stress and overwork, especially in the face of caring for students who are often, in effect, abandoned by divorce, family tensions or parents forced to work on the Mainland or overseas. The drama, performed by teachers showing they have talents beyond the blackboard, and students from Rosary Hill School, Yaumati Catholic Primary SchoolHoi Wang Roadand Shun Lee Catholic Secondary Schoolwho demonstrated the artistic value of the all-round quality of their educationportrayed teachers as belonging to one family.

Father Yip Hing Wah came into centre stage at the dramatic invitation of the actors and delivered the key-note speech. Father Yip stressed that “when we engender hope we are self-empowering.” He explained that this aspect of hope is tangible and said that in some ways we can touch our hope. “We give generously to the young and to the poor,” he said. “This is a sign of belief that we can touch.” He noted that “it is life itself that gives hope” and “ life gives the possibility of creativity.”

After that, the two Bishops went on stage to give their blessing to all the teachers present. The teachers also made their pledge to dedicate themselves in educating youngsters, helping them to develop fully according to the vision and mission of Catholic education. Amid the joyous singing of “Walking hand in hand” of all participants, the function ended in a happy mood.
